What to see and do in Autumn in New South Wales

Anytime is a great time to be in Australia but Autumn, especially in the southern states where the weather is more pronounced, has a certain feel to it. Cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Perth are very green for most of the year so when autumn comes around, the whole scene changes when the deciduous trees change their colour. It’s almost like the sunset of the seasons foreshadowing the night of winter to come. Some very exciting events occur during this time and here is some information on a few.

Go camping

Autumn is a great time to go camping in New South Wales, the weather is mild compared to that of the harsh Australian summer, so it is a great time to be outdoors. There is an immeasurable number of camping locations all over New South Wales, with some of the most popular being Picnic Point campground in Wapengo, and Diamond Head campground in Diamond Head, which is near the beach. No matter where you live, there will be a campsite within your reach should you choose to rough it a bit during this season.

Horse racing

One of the best things you can do if you are interested in the sport of horseracing is to attend the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival at the Royal Randwick Racecourse. Many popular races take place during this time including the Golden Slipper and The Championships. One standout race is the TJ Smith Stakes which is a Group 1 race with prize money of $2,500,000. The Blue Mountains are an extremely popular holiday destination, especially for families. One of the great things about this location is that it is only a short drive from Sydney and you can also get there by train, which takes about two hours. You can go camping, hiking, mountain bike riding, take tours, go kayaking and rock climbing to name just a few things. There is one stand out thing to see in the Blue Mountains which is The Three Sisters. This giant sandstone rock formation featuring three peaks is one of the most popular attractions in the area. The town of Katoomba is host to many tours and adventures including the Scenic Railway and the Scenic Skyway which gives you some breathtaking views as you travel 270 metres above the valley floor.

Go to the Vivid Festival

Vivid Sydney is one of the biggest festivals on the New South Wales calendar and celebrates light, music and ideas. This annual event takes place at Circular Quay which is not far from Sydney Harbour and is also a popular place for viewing the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Vivid began in 2009 and in 2012 it garnered over 500,000 visitors to the outdoor exhibitions, while in 2017 more than 2.33 million people attended the event. The light shows are amazing, particularly when the Sydney Opera House is lit up. It is amazing and dazzling, to say the least.
